A highly interesting engraver's error
Lot 2774
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 19 mm, 3.46 g, 6 h), Rome, 316. IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI D N / (star) - (crescent) / R P Sol, nude but for chlamys, standing front, head to left, raising his right hand in salute and holding globe in his left. RIC 46. Extremely rare. Flan crack, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from C. J. Martin on 15 March 1991.

The reverse of this intriguing coin reveals a notable engraver's error. Initially, the die cutter inscribed the legend SOLI INVICTO COMITI before recognizing the mistake and adding D N. The officina letter P was then added last, awkwardly cramped due to limited space.
